The console video game industry has long favored good games over superior hardware so declaring the XBox as "the best platform" is easily challenged on a number of fronts.

On a past Script School radio show I had one of the most talented solo game developers out there, Jeff Minter (Defender 2000 and Tempest 2000 on Atari Jaguar), and he laid it out pretty clear: fun games are what will sell consoles, not killer technology, but the shirts go for the marketing angles. They'd rather have a so-so game with a killer license like The Hulk, then a great game with some unknown character.

People call Nintendo games kiddie games, but when you stop and think about it: they have no rival in that niche. They own that market and that is where they make the bulk of their money. So Sony is going to go after the portable market now? Good luck! Without an inventory of good games it will be very difficult for them to compete, and from what I understand they are not making it CD based so none of their games (even the older ps1 titles) will be backward compatible.

The problem with XBox is the games. They've overpromised and underdelivered.

There are a couple good titles, but there aren't enough good titles to take over Sony. Halo is good. Brute Force was well hyped but only ... ok, IMO. Until the time comes where there are more good games than marketing hype, XBox can have the most killer system on the planet, but they are still going to continue to hemmorage ca$h.
