To renew or not .Mac?

Probably not the best timing right now pondering whether or not I should renew my .Mac account when I’m having trouble logging into the system. I’m guessing my account troubles have to do with Apple updating the storage space to a full 1GB. That’s getting closer to reasonable when you figure the annual membership dues (pictured below):

108 bones and some change for .Mac? I’m thinking of other things we could spend that money on in the coming months vs. something I have barely used over the last 11 months.

Ok, I got a free subscription to Version Tracker ($24.95 value), downloaded a free game ($19.95) value and got some free Garageband audio loops ($$?) that I haven’t used yet.

I see there is an email-only account which I will at least do that because I don’t want to lose my .mac email. This has come in handy for testing email sent to myself and my programs.

I’ve used the iDisk a few times, linked a podcast and created two boilerplate homepages but not much else.

It’s hard to believe a year has almost passed already! In that time, I’ve upgraded to Tiger, added the RadioShark as an every day application and very, very loosely followed what’s been happening on the Mac scene.

Guess I’ll throw this out to anybody else reading. Is there some great value to a .Mac account besides the email and storage space that I’m missing out on? I don’t have a second Mac to sync to, so that functionality isn’t a big deal, but is there some other cool feature I just haven’t taken advantage of?

A new version of Virex is available for .Mac users. MacCentral: Virex 7.5.1 pulls mail scanning feature

Apple’s .Mac service comes with a downloadable version of McAfee’s Virex, an anti-virus software application for Mac OS X. The software was updated to version 7.5 and released to .Mac subscribers this past August, but was pulled from circulation and replaced with an older version soon after. Now an updated version, 7.5.1, is ready for download. The update removes a feature that apparently caused problems in that eariler release.
