Surf websites as screensaver with IdleWeb

July 26th, 2006 No Comments »

I currently don’t use any screensaver program with the Mac, besides the default going black. I’ve been thinking about buying that aquarium program, but IdleWeb might be worth considering:

A screensaver module for Mac OS X that allows you to view websites while you aren’t using your computer. URLs can also be dragged to the list of bookmarks from Safari.

Maximum browsing space with DeskBrowse v1.0

July 3rd, 2006 No Comments »

In the crowd (I am) that always craves more browsing space. DeskBrowse seeks to answer those cravings:

We developed DeskBrowse with one thing in mind: a way to get information from the web quickly and easily in a nice user interface with the least hassle involved for the end user. The browser is toggled in and out of the side of the screen via a hotkey.

I downloaded and tried this freeware, open source browser right away. GNU Licensed and created with the WebKit KHTML engine. After dragging to my application folder it hung up on the “Resolving Host” part. Just press stop and browse to a different page. The initial browsing window is about on par with Opera in terms of minimalist design. When is somebody going to have a browser with only the window and allow drag and drop URLs to launch new windows?

Looking for an older version of the Safari browser? Michelf.com has Safari v1.0 thru v2.03 available for download. Note:

On Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, Safari 1.0 will refuse to open a browser window, showing you a “could not create document” error. You can work around this by selecting “Open Location ⌘L” from the File menu or by first opening a local document from your hard disk.

How to avoid the Mac Safari virus

February 21st, 2006 No Comments »

A hole in Safari has been discovered that could lead to launching of shell scripts. Heiseonline.de published a workaround fix until Apple plugs this hole:

The best immediate recourse against such an attack is to deactivate the option “Open ’safe’ files after downloading” in the “General” section of Safari’s preferences. Alternative web browsers such as Camino or Firefox do not support the automatic execution of files.

Safari RSS shrink text feature

January 12th, 2006 No Comments »

This isn’t new to veteran Safari RSS users, but it’s new to me: you can move the slider up and down on an RSS feed and see less or more text.

This is useful for full text feeds to be able to shrink down quickly to the first few words or the headline only.

tabbed browsing in Safari

I love tabbed browsing. It’s probably my favorite feature of Firefox and I hope in the new version of IE that they will add that. Tabbed browsing in Safari has been available since April 2003.

Here’s how to activate in Safari:

STEP 1. Safari -> Preferences -> Tabs
STEP 2. Check the box that say “Enable Tabbed Browsing”
